Rob Morgan's piece is excellent food for thought. It highlight a need for some good work on primary sources for the Far East theater. I am sure there are some rich reports in the archives.
Does anyone have any information regarding the fate of the Marmon Herrington Armoured cars in Singapore?
The Japanese Marine tankette converted from a British carrier featured in Chamberlain and Ellis's "The Carrier Story" was serialised in Airfix Magazine and published by Profile as a book (ISBN 0 85383 0886). The photo shows a crude sloped roof over the carrier and a slightly tapered drum turret with a large painted anchor badge. The text (in the book) reads
" Japanese A few carriers were captured by the Japanese at Singapore, Hong Kong and elsewhere in 1941-42. One or two of these are known to have been converted to rudimentary light tanks by plating over the super-structure. A crude turret was built centrally towards the rear with a hinged raised cupola and a machine gun. Driver and front gunner occupied their usual positions. These vehicles were used in action; others, unconverted, were used as supply tractors."
There are no specific credits for either the information or the photo. I have not found it on the IWM website. However I did find photos of the 25pdr and Marmon Herringtons in December 1941 - IWM photo ref FE479 and FE481.
Rob I will try to find my copy of the Airfix Magazine where chris Ellis converted the Airfix 'Bren Carrier' to this tankette.
I trust this is of use.
